4.3 OMC troubles

I had an earlier topic about my coil with an oil residue on the outside of it, I intend to change that. My next question is about the ignition switch and tachometer. I have been told that the tach and ign switch both can keep it from getting fire to the distributor. Any info on troubleshooting this will be greatly appreciated

If you doubt any of that, pull all the wires off the ignition coil (except for the distributor's wires) and jump a wire from the battery to the positive ignition coil terminal. The engine should run like this, but if you have points or the coil requires a ballast resistor, don't run the engine too long like that, it will wear out the coil and/or points. Other than that, it should run like a charm if the tach or ignition switch were problematic.

The wiring diagrams for these items are not great, but do not over look the kill switch. I did and it cost me the better part of 2 months on the water. My boat would start and die immediately.

If you haven't altered the wiring harness for you engine, you should have a purple/red wire that goes to positive ign coil terminal. The wire itself is a resistor. The longer that wire is, the more resistance.
