Interested in a 97 Reinell 18ft. Ive narrowed down that Id like to stick with the volvo, and have the 4.3. Honestly, riser/manifold design scare me no matter if its merc or volv. I know the pit falls of what can happen if they are breached. For a 97, that looks maintained, should I plan on doing them just for piece of mind? I need to ask if its ever been in salt water, and will keep it that way if I jump on the deal.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... So long as the manifolds ain't those darn 1 piece units,...

Just pull the risers off, 'n Inspect the gasket surfaces,....

They start at 'bout 1/4" wide,... If only 1/8" is left, it's time to replace 'em,...

If ya find a 4.3l With the Batwing, 1 piece manifolds,...
Don't buy the boat, unless the manifolds are Converted to 2 piece manifolds, 'n risers,...

Volvo never used the batwings so that shouldn't be an issue. If it has been used in saltwater, they likely need to be replaced if they haven't already been.
