4.3 stringer stern drive problems

So I bought my first boat. And it ran GREAT for about 20 mins. The engine quit and I thought I just ran out of gas because i'm an idiot and didn't put gas in it before I went out to test my new boat. The next day I go out and the engine started, but I could not get it to go into gear. After a few minutes I noticed that I was overheating and shut it down. The next thing I noticed is that if I shift into Forward or reverse, the prop is jammed both ways, but in neutral it spins freely. After looking at how the parts go together in these things I have come to a couple ideas about what my problem is.

#1 The vertical shaft (water pump) is jammed.

#2 something on the shaft or Upper gear is stripped and allowing the engine to idle freely.

Anybody have any great ideas on how I can trouble shoot my problem without ripping this thing completely apart?
Is there an easy way to get to the upper gears to see if they look ok? Or do you have to remove the whole damn drive to tear it apart?
Thanks for any help you may have for me.

Re: 4.3 stringer stern drive problems

sounds like the lower unit locked up and that caused the w/p shaft splines to strip (weakest link)

drain the lower and see what runs out

don't see too many 4.3/stringer combos...only made them for a few months before the cobras came out
