Here goes, I have a 91 4.3 mercruiser. Just replaced pistons and had heads redone. All back together and trying to set timing and carb is popping. I also just found out I need a new coil. Could a bad coil cause the popping and make it difficult to set timing?

Id say thats a fair bet. setting the timing is the last step, when the ign sys is in good working order.
Also recheck the firing order

What is your problem with setting timing. Popping could be caused by lean carb, wrong firing order, mis-adjusted valves, cracked cap, and a number of other things.
