Sound never changes while in gear or idled up it sounds like it's coming from the back of motor

Pull the outdrive and run it to see if noise goes away. My bet would be gimbal bearing , ujointsø, or outdrive bearings . Suspect you may find rust water and or gear lube in bellows/on ujoints ginbal bearing and input shaft

gimbal bearing and input shaft/ujoints is turning while engine is running regardless of in our out of gear

I took it to vovlo dealer to have a gimbal bearing put in they said u joints looked good when I got from the shop is when it started making the noise

Ayuh,...... Welcome Aboard,....... The 1st step in the diagnosis is still to remove the drive, 'n see if it still knocks,......

I assume you mean shop installed a new gimbal now it makes this noise?clearly find another shop cause they didn't take two minutes to make sure the gimbal was installed right by running it on the hose...

Most likely gimbal isnt seated correctly. Take it back they should correct this.

if there is an issue taking it back time/location etc pull drive and folks here can walk you through making it right may be as simple as driving the gimbal in a tad farther.

If I do take the outdrive off do I hafe to have a realignment tool? I'm hoping it is something in the drive not motor!!

Removing and reinstalling the drive won't change the alignment but without the tool you won't know if the alignment is OK or not.

I'm going tear it apart when the weather breaks an maybe the shop made a mistake installing the gimbal baron

I meant the installation of the gimble bearing. There is a bearing setting tool you should use to make sure the bearing is properly seated in the gimble housing. It sounds like this is where they went wrong. The drive alignment is a separate issue, I'd pick up an alignment tool and learn how to use it. Checking alignment is part of I/O maintenance.
