My 99 4.3 has no advance, it simply sits at base timming.

I have replaced the pickup coil, distributer, and ignition module 3 times.

What else could be wrong?

Re: 4.3GS with no timing advance

i dont know if this helps but on my engine (5.0 gl) there is a jumper that puts it in base timing for adjustment purposes
maybe yours is still installed
it pluged directly into the ignition mod under the dist cap

I wish that was it, I have nothing pluged into the 4 wire connector.

Is it possible that the jumper plug needs to be used to "teach" the module what is base timming?
I have been just setting it at idle, then I was going to set it for full advance at 4000rpm and make sure that base timing was within spec.

Re: 4.3GS with no timing advance

again my engine is different
but yes jumper needed to be in place to set base timing
then removed to CHECK advance not to set it
reminder: never install or remove jumper with engine running
there is a procedure in the top 2 posts by don s
adults only / volvo penta
i would read them first before proceding

good luck

I would really like to know what that plug is doing.

Re: 4.3GS with no timing advance

plug installed lets you set base timing
if left in timing will not advance with rpms
after base is set at correct idle rpm jumper is removed to allow advance
remember (never install or remove jumper with engine running)
what are you using to check timing
standard timing light or advance timing light

standard timing light.
I will be setting the timming this weekend, so I'll post the results.
I really hope that it works.

That is exactly BACKWARDS. The engine has to be running when you hook the wire to B+ and running when you disconnect it. Look at that writeup again. http://forums.iboats.com/editpost.php?do=editpost&p=1807566

NOTE:
The Alligator clip lead of the Initial Timing Connector must never be connected to a B+ source until after engine is started. This is necessary to avoid damage to the electronics of the ignition system.

i just reread the procedure and don s is correct as usual
sorry for that

The engine has to be running when you hook the wire to B+ and running when you disconnect it.
