4.3l king cobra ? ?

Hey guys

new boater here i am looking at a 89 doral boat with a 4.3l king cobra (i think )

on the motor it says king cobra on carb cover ..

my question is, is this king cobra set up prone to all the " gear problems" i have read about ?after much reading on the shifter cable issues i am confused because the data base i looked at says the 89 4.3 doesnt come with a king cobra drive

You're right; the king cobra only came on V8 engines, not V6 engines. If you post the model numbers of the engine and drive (or post pictures) we may be able to help identify them.

I'd stay away from that boat.Buy a Mercruiser or Volvo those older Cobras while they work they are expensive and not worth the trouble.J

I read some where that some 4.3s were labeled "King Cobra" which furthed added to the confusion on which boats actually had the King Cobra cone clutch drive. As far as I know the 4.3 King Cobra is the dog clutch drive and subject to the same shift cable issues as the regular Cobra.

I've posted this many times, but here it goes again.
OMC name 3 completely different drives "King Cobra"
1. The dog style clutch standard Cobra drives. Some were named King Cobra.
2. The King Cobra with the cone clutch used from 90 or 91 to 93. this one had the raw water pump on the drive.
3. The King Cobra that was the joint venture drive with Volvo. Used from 94 to 98 when Volvo bought out OMC. This drive is now known as the SX.

How could anyone possibly be confused when someone says King Cobra

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,.... Don't look at or buy any I/O that says OMC on it anywhere....
