This is my second summer with a used 95 Champion 4.3L Mercruiser with Alpha outdrive. I purchased the boat in very good condition from an individual whom I nicknamed, "Anal Larry". He appeared to have taken great care of the boat.

I noticed last summer that it would take on some water during a weekend's use, but it being my first I/O I was unsure if that was normal. Late in the summer I found that when parked with the trim up it took on a lot of water. I had planned to have it inspected and repaired during the off season, but did not.

During this third weekend of use this summer, the boat takes on water when parked with the trim down. My bilge pump does not have a float switch and I would cycle it for 5 minutes every 2 hours to keep it dry when tied up.

I am trying to determine the best way to find the source of the leak. I looked at and around the outdrive before removing the plug while on the trailer sitting on the ramp and could not see any water coming out. It has been suggested that I should remove the engine cover, back the boat into the water and crawl into the bilge and inspect the area around the outdrive housing. I'm not sure if that's possible. It has also been suggested that I fill it up with water and look for the leak as water is coming out. What is the best method?

I'm assuming that since it takes on more water sitting than when moving it is not a cooling system leak or other operational type problem. Does that sound like a reasonable assumption?

Finally, if it is a leak around the I/O housing, would I be wasting time trying to seal it to make it through the summer? I prefer to leave it in the water from Friday to Sunday and trailered Monday through Thursday. What type of sealants work best for this situation?

Thanks in advance for any ideas or help.

I have the same thing with my mercruiser, and i found a torn boot under my drive, My guess would be when you lift the outdrive the tear opens up and lets more water in. there are 3 boots under there a shift boot, a exuast boot, and a drive shaft boot. the one that was torn on mine was the drive shaft, and water was coming in the gimble. get a flashlight and take a look. vinnie

One Way, I had EXACTLY the same problem last summer with my '86 Chaparral 178. (Mercruiser Alpha-One outdrive.) The "bellows" were old and cracked. So, when I was underway, water would rush by and wouldn't enter the bilge. However, when stopped, water would enter the bilge. It would also make sense that when your motor is trimmed up, it takes on more water, because the bellow aren't compressed then. They discovered mine when it was winterized...fixed it then, to the tune of about $180. Not bad, considering that it would have probably sunk the boat...eventually. Good luck!

Thanks for sharing that info.

Since it appears that it is a season-ending repair, I'm thinking of adding a second bilge pump (original does not have a float switch) and aux. battery for it for the completion of summer. I keep it trailered during the week and only have to worry about it during the weekend.

Seems I learn more about the boat each trip out.

Thanks again.

Another common problem is the shift cable boot. The cable end gets frayed after time and wears through the boot. A small hole in just the right spot will let the water in. Mine sank the boat in 2 days, fortunately shallow water. When you have the drive pulled off to change the boot its best to change the other boots exhaust and drive as well if they look cracked at all. Good time to grease the universals too. Since one of your boots is leaking now make sure it has not gotten worse with your weekend run. Even a second pump wont keep up to a large tear in the drive boot. :(
