4.3L Mercruiser Oil Question...

Hey guys, It's been a while since I have been on the forum. Last year I bought a boat, the block was cracked (no way of knowing). Long story short, paid good money for a boat with toast engine.

Anyways, I got a new 4.3L with 4 bbl carb in er now, so I'm back in action.

My question is: How much oil should a new 4.3L engine hold? Reason I ask, is I had to use the dipstick off my old motor, because the new motor was supposed to come with one, but the guy who was helping install, lost it in the mess of his shop.

I put in 4L of oil, got a new filter on, ran it for about 10 seconds, pressure came up to 40-50 psi. Shut it off, waited 5 minutes and checked the dipstick. It says it is overfull? The trailer is on FAIRLY flat service and the boat sits on it basically the same as in the water.

Now I'm worried that the dipstick is not correct for this oil pan (crankcase) or something as It is off the old 4.3L.

Should I trust the dipstick, or how much oil should it actually require...THANKS GUYS!

Bert, with a filter mine takes 4 1/2 quarts. The book says this is approx and use the dip stick for final fill. Have fun at the lake tomorrow!!!!

the stick should be the same but in the rare case its not then fill the amount in the previous post and then make a mark on the stick where the oil is so you have a new reference.

Re: 4.3L Mercruiser Oil Question...

My dealer told me 4.3 litres of oil in a 4.3 L engine. The parts guy looked it up since I was buying oil for a change. That converts to 4.5 quarts as fuzzybob noted.
