Hello all, I'm very impressed with the broad knowledge you all have!

I hope you can help me isolate this problem. I picked up a used 90 20' Sea Ray wtih a 4.3L LX and Alpha One drive. It been sitting around since last season when it was used last. The local marine did system checks, some tuneup work (plugs, wires, rotor, cap), to insure the boat was in good order. The engine is original with 375hrs of use.

The engine, sterndrive ran fine for a 4-5 short trips, about an 45-hour each trip. Looking in the bilge and checking the oil before each trip to find same level of water from the last trip (3 or so inches). A check of the engine oil each time revealing brown-dark brown oil, just above the fill line, 25-40 used.

Heading out last week, I found oil and water in the bilge, 4-5" with no measure on the stick.

I pumped out the bilge and began to inspect the engine for a leak. The rear section of the engine aft of the disributor appeared to has a very slight sheen. The aft section of the engine passenger side appears to be the area where the leak drains to the bilge. There is a slight sheen on the aft spark plug wires, and intake manifold. None around the exhaust manafold or around the head gasket. On the oil pan what appears to be the plug, feels stripped(is it threaded?). The oil filter appears to have spots on it from spray and is secure (more than hand tight). After refilling the oil I lost a qt in 40 minutes 25-3500 rpm. Do these symptoms sound familar to anyone?

If you have a stripped plug thats bad. They make oversize drain plugs that cut new threads at autozone stores. Sure beats pulling the engine for a oil pan.

There is also a chance the intake is leaking slightly at the back, were it mates to the top of the block, a new set of intake gaskets and a 1/4 inch bead of rtv along the front and rear sections and about a 1/2 up each end of the heads will cure any leaks there, but it sounds more like the oil pan drain plug is suspect for the amount of oil leaking. The intake could also leak water but that would or should show up in the oil. You mention the boat was laid up for a period of time, was is winterized? are all drain plugs on block and exhaust manifolds in place and secure?

Re: 4.3L Oil Loss

I am a new boater and have the same engine/outdrive combo as Ten above. Concerning tuning up for the summer- should I have a marina do the work or is it possible to get a service manual that will outline the things that need to be serviced every year? What types of things need to be done? I always done all of the work on my trucks, but looking at the engine setup and outdrive, i'll be honest, is somewhat intimidating because the way the manifolds on, and the way the engine is set in the compartment, I can't even get to the plugs! The boat is a 93 Mariah Diablo runabout. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

YOu can get a clymer manual pretty cheap for your motr/outdrive, But I suggest getting a mercury/mercruiser manual it is much better.
The basic tune up stuff you can do by your self and save tons of cash!!!
