Re: 4.3l starting

My first guess is the igntion switch, do both terminals get juice when you turn the key to the start position? Does this engine have a ballast resistor? A wire should be run from the starter solenoid to the positive ignition coil terminal. I don't think that is the likely cuplrit, but its worth trying.

I'm not sure if it has a ballast resistor I'll have to check.Where would it be located?----1988 four winns 200 horizon 4.3l

Now that I think of it, you probably have a resistive wire instead of a ballast resistor(same difference). I don't think that is the problem though, what could be a cause is a bad igntion switch. even if it is the ignition switch, it shouldnt do that if a wire is run from the starter solenoid to the pos ignition coil terminal. Check to see if the ignition coil gets 12v when cranking. When the engine is running, the ignition coil should be getting around 8 or 9v. Tell us what you find

It's an OMC. I'm leaving for the lake right now to check it out. Thanks!

Re: 4.3l starting

I replaced switch but still have problem. I put a volt meter on positive terminal of coil and when I cranked starter I only had 5 volts as i released key it started and voltage went to 9.75.I then put the meter on the purple/bk wire post on the starter solenoid with the same results.I have 12 volts on the yellow/red wire at solenoid can I put them on the same post? Is there a set of contacts inside of solenoid that closes to put 12 volts on purple/bk wire to coil?

Re: 4.3l starting

It sounds like a bad solenoid. You could replace it, or you could move the purple/black wire to another spot in the starting circuit. If you did that you might have to put a diode on the wire to keep the ignition coil from supplying power to the starter circuit.
