Hi all,

Posted a few weeks ago about my friends 1978 4Hp evinrude model # 4806E.....

Got it decarbed, new prop, changed/flushed oil in lower unit, new and correct spark plugs etc etc...

Decarbed it in every imaginable variation with nearly a can of liquid sea foam in a gallon or so of gas, and nearly a can of spray (into the carb while running as well as into removed spark plug holes)....long soaks, hot soaks, cold soaks, short soaks, running fast, running slow etc etc....

Enough crud and smoke came out to make me feel like it probably did some good, but not enough to be alarming (which would indicate to me at least that the engine had been a bit abused...)

Did all this in a large garbage can of water in the back yard....havent got it back in the ocean yet to see if there is any performance improvement....but it does seem to start a bit better....

Now, while buying all this stuff, I also bought a tube of "dielectric silicone compound, for electrical systems" manufactured by AGS...

Now, the questions.

There are 2 rubber plug electrical connectors. One with 2 wires, and one with 3 (4?) wires.

Should I pull these guys apart, clean em up, and put in new silicone grease? Or should I just leave well enough alone? I know they have NEVER been pulled apart since 1978....

If clean up, any pointers on how to do it? Any hints on how much grease to put in?

And while I was at the boat place....I notice they had manuals for sale for about 30 dollars..but the "shop manuals" for the engines were for something like 4 to 40? hp and from something like 1970 to 1994 year models. And the darn things were wrapped in plastic so I couldnt browse them and get any idea of how useful they would be.....

Is that too much for a manual and too general to redo the water pump and lower unit oil seals should I decide to do so? Or would that be sufficient?

Or would I be much better off getting a manual for that specific year and model of engine on ebay or somewhere else (if someone knows where to get such things)....and do the manuals get THAT specific for year and make?

thanks!

take care

Blll

Bill:
These manuals are much better:
Ebay auctions, click here

And cheaper! :)

I would take the electrics apart and use that dielectric grease on them. Undoubtedly, the original grease is now nothing more than clay, and that stuff will keep the electrics dry if you take a boarding sea. Put a little on the spark plugs and boots as well.
