Hello all

I just purchased a 4 hp Johnson model # J4RDHESR 1990 I think, put it in tub and it starts right up but where does the water pee out. There are three holes together up high on the shaft, but this appears to be exhaust. You cant hook a garden hose to this motor, this seems odd for this new an engine.

Thanx for all replies

If there really is a peehole, you'll find it under the rear portion of the cowl and inside, you'll see a hose running to it coming from the engine block. If not, then the water should discharge out the three holes in the motorleg that you saw. If you don't see any water coming from here, then you might check and see if the water pump is even working. The best way to check this, is to remove the thernostat and see if it pumps water, while it's running. It's possible too, that your thermostat is stuck shut. I've seen cases like this many times.

No there is no pee hole on that motor .. at least nothing shown on the diagrams.
You should get some water, a few drops or a mist being strayed out of the exhaust relief ports though.

No, no provision to connect a hose or to use muffs. You'll have to run it in a barrel, trash can or something
but not one full of garden rubbish

Sorry missed that earlier. Not valid advice because this engines does not have a thermostat!

Check the temperature of the power head. You should be able to touch it but probably not keep a finger on it for more than a couple of seconds. The exhaust cover is not fully water cooled so that will be hot. It may be hot around the spark plugs too.

By all means replace the water pump impeller if it has not been changed recently.

Straightforward job to drop the gearcase off (2 bolts from underneath, 1 from above) water tube pulls out from the pump, shift rod pulls from the mechanism at the top and the drive shaft pulls from the crankshaft. Only likely complication is if the drive shaft is stuck in the crankshaft.

Don't put the old impeller back even if it looks OK. While its stripped down put in a new one!

Also just noticed that according to the diagrams there should be a cover over the relief port on the leg. A muffler they call it. Look closely. If two of those holes are threaded then that's where the "muffler" should be screwed on. Not important but may be a little bit more noisy without it

Thanx for the replies. Yes the muffler is there on the leg, is this where water should come out, it doesnt but motor doesnt get hot either.

Are you putting it in gear and revving it up in a can or barrel? If not it won't won't spray water out the holes. Idling doesn't get the pump spinning quick enough to have it spray out the exhaust ports.

No I was just running at idle. I'll try revving.

You'll not get much water out of there just a few droplets or a mist, so little that you might not notice it if not looking for it.
The cooling water mainly goes out with the exhaust under water

Bought it locally back in the early 1980s. Hardly been used. It's a 1974 Featherweight. I use it on my little dinghy. I also have a 1973 40 Plus that I bought to fit my sailing dinghy. That's hardly been used either.

Quite easy to come by in the UK despite not having been made for quite a while.
Noisy, oily and awkward to handle but those who love 'em love 'em to bits

A bit of a fan club in various parts of the world esp Australia for some reason.

Brand new unused and still in original shipping crates examples turn up from time to time
