First -- how old is the battery? Just because you charged it does not mean it has the capacity to start the engine. Second -- check both ends of both battery cables (as in remove them and make them shiny clean). Then reinstall. If you have wing nuts on the battery, throw them away and replace with a star washer and stainless nut that you can "tighten" properly. Now try. If you still get just a click, connect your voltmeter POS lead to the large terminal on the solenoid that has the cable going to the starter. Connect the NEG lead to the engine block (ground). Turn the key to start and observe voltage. If its less than 10.5 or 11 volts either the battery is junk, the solenoid is bad, or the starter is bad. Using a single jumper cable, connect one end to the POS battery post. Touch the other end the post on the starter (if you can get to it). Otherwise touch the large post on the solenoid that feeds the starter. Be prepared for spark. If the starter spins, its ok and you still have a solenoid, battery or cable issue. Try a different "known good" battery. If it doesn't spin your local auto electric shop (starter/alternator rebuilder) can test and rebuilt the starter for you. With a good battery, good cable, and a known operable starter, the only thing left is a bad solenoid. Jump the two large terminals with a jumper cable to prove it.
