Hey all,

I have decided to go with a 4-stroke engine on my new boat purchase.

Here the Choices I have:

1. Yamaha 90HP 4-Stroke EFI:
-Displacement: 97ci
-RPM Range: 5000-6000
-Gear Ratio: 2.31:1
-Weight: 369 Lbs

2. Mercury 90HP 4-Stroke Carb:
-Displacement: 97.4ci
-RPM Range: 5000-6000
-Gear Ratio: 2.33:1
-Weight: 386 Lbs

3. Johnson 90HP 4-Stroke EFI:
-Displacement: 119ci
-RPM Range: 4500-5500
-Gear Ratio: 2.59:1
-Weight: 430 Lbs

Does one have a better track record in the 4-Stroke class than another? Does any use Hydrolic or Shim valves?

Just an FYI, Johnson has 3 service dealers in a 75 mile range, Yamaha has about 7, and Mercury has about 50.

Thanks for the help/input.

-TheChad

I have a 115 Johnson/Suzy EFI and am very happy with it. Glad I don't have carbs.
It has shimms and a chain.

Just a thought -- BRP is dropping the larger 4 strokes so you may want to check with dealers about service and parts. Service and parts should still be available but some dealers are funny about discontinued motors. A Suzuki dealer should still be able to help though.

90HP is considered one of the "larger 4 strokes"?

Thanks,

-TheChad

the Yamaha 90 would be the best choice, if you have a good local dealer.

matttttttt, how long have had that Yamaha efi 4 stroke motor on your boat? What sort of maintenance have you had to have performed, and at what cost? Chief ;)

For what it is worth:

"In this latest study, J.D. Power and Associates ranked Yamaha “Highest in Customer Satisfaction for Two-Stroke Outboards.” In last year’s study, Yamaha’s four-stroke outboards were awarded, and the year before that both Yamaha’s two- and four-strokes were ranked highest."

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboar..._ranks_yamaha_highest_third_year_running.aspx

I have a Yamaha myself (F115 4-stroke).
I'm happy with it. Good quality, reasonable price, but most important to me - reliable. Service no problem where I use my boat.
I have 5 year warranty on my F115, just in case (the electronic boxes is one the things I worry about in modern outboards so...)

I prefer EFI instead of carburators so that is why I would not select the Mercury 90 4-stroke (but it is a fine outboard despite this).

It should be, doesn't it use the same Yamaha-made powerhead as the Yamaha F75/F90? ;)

Mine hasn't been to a dealer since new. 2003 with 145 hours. I do the oil and filters myself. I buy them from a Suzuki dealer on-line. Good luck with whatever you buy. Check the engine forums, and it is clear which have the most issues of the modern motors ;)

Re: 4-Stroke Engine Choice... Which Engine?

only owned the engine for 5 weeks. but i have all service records from the original owner. looking at them, he only had the dealership winterize and commission each year since it was new in 2003. no problems for the first 330 hrs (knock on wood).

Ratracer,
Yes, at least it used to be that way as far as I know. Mercury and Yamaha used same powerheads for many of their outboards. The cowl and lower units are diffrent, and I'm sure rather much other "things" under the cowl (electronics and such) also.

The Yamaha is the better choice, of the three you listed, because the Mercury is a hybrid Yamaha/Mercury and the Johnson is a hybrid Suzuki/Johnson. The hybrids are not bad and actually are as reliable as anything else, but you will get a lot more respect on the water with a Yamaha and parts availability with any hybrid will always be an issue someday.

My best advice would be to go to a DFI in any brand. I loathe four-strokes because of their poor performance on take off power.

Of what you have listed, the obvious choice is the Yamaha. I too agree with Elvin, I tend to lean towards the 2 stroke DFI engines as well. Weight savings, minimum maintenance, and better take off power are only few of the benefits. Any of the DFI engines our there right now are going to be great engines.

I know everyone says that, but the DFI 2-strokes, are only slightly lighter.. (IE: Mercury 4-stroke 90HP 386 LBS, Mercury DFI 2-stroke 90HP 375 LBS)

That few lbs isn't going to make my boat handle any better, and its not going to make me go any faster.

If they were cheaper then the 4-strokes, i would more than likely go that rout, but they are the exact same price, or within $500 of an equal 4-stroke.

EPA is getting more strict every few years, What happens on the coast eventually ends up inland, and on the coast (California) 2-strokes, weather it be Carbed, or DFI are being restricted on lakes, within 5 years will probably be completely banned from lakes. Many drinking water lakes they are already banned from, Several lakes in Navada have also banned 2-strokes of any kind, clean or not.

I was seriously considering the DFI engine, because some of the arguments people on this forum have put forth, but when it comes down to almost the same price, I'd rather have the security of knowing I can take my boat ANYWHERE, including back to California (where I moved from), and know that i can launch my boat with out problem.

If the Carbed 2-stroke 90HP was (Just for example) $6,000, the DFI 2-Stroke 90HP was $8,000, and the 4-Stroke 90HP was $10,000. Then i would consider the DFI very seriously. But they arn't. They are very close to, if not the same price (Depending on brand) as the 4-strokes.

From what i've read both from the people in this post, and from some other forums, 4-strokes don't have the constant maintaince that everyone here keeps insisting about, They arn't much heavier then the DFI's, and I havent read 1 complaint from anyone with a 14-20' Aluminum fishing boat (Like the boat I am purchasing.. Lowe Fish n Ski FS175) about "Hole Shot" being a problem with a 4-stroke.

Those are the reasons i have come to choose the 4-stroke over the DFI. I have done alot of research, and spent countless hours over the past 2 weeks on this issue.

Thanks for the help & suggestions.

-TheChad

Re: 4-Stroke Engine Choice... Which Engine?

In the end you should always go with what you are comfortable with....Having said that, unless you know something that no one in the marine industry knows, DFI meets current EPA standards, will meet future EPA standards and will probably be the only technology available that will be able to meet the future EPA standards that are being explored by the EPA and CARB( read that as catalytic converters for future 4-strokes...it can be done...but only if you are willing to buy a new converter every couple of years)

Re: 4-Stroke Engine Choice... Which Engine?

I have owned a Mariner F75 and a Yamaha F115. The sound of these motors were very much alike and a bit more rough than the third motor I have owned, a Suzuki df140. The Suzuki were very quiet at low rpm's and the 90 hp. version should be even better.
The Suzuki/Johnson 90 will proberly feel more powerfull because of it's 119ci.

----------------
Forsberg
