I have a 2 stroke, I mix my oil 50:1. I was told if I could not find 2 stroke oil I could use 4 stroke oil.
Is this a good idea?
What weight oil?
Thanks

Joe, As an explanation. In the old days outboards were designed to run on straight 30 weight non-detergent motor oil. Two-Cycle was invented, but was not mandatory. My 1959 Johnson could (and was) run on standard (read 4 cycle) motor oil.

Today 4 cycle oil are mostly multiweight and contain detergents, metallic additives and other items not designed to be burned in two-cycle motors.

Then again, if you have mosquito problems, the smoke would chase them away.

If you're out in the middle of nowhere and all you have is crankcase oil, use it. But mix double oil. 2-stroke oil is far superior for lubricating 2-strokes. I have a 1960 35Hp Sea King that originally specified SAE 30 at 1 quart to 6 gallons of gas. The first outboard specific oil was just dyed SAE 30 that tinted the gas so you knew it was in there. But when genuine 2-stroke oils came out you could mix at 1 pint instead of 1 quart in most outboards where the crankshaft is fully supported with needle bearings. I've been mixing at 50:1 for years and the motor is still running fine.

Only for a pinch, plug fouling and carb jet problems will show up after a while. Also run less than 75% max and greater than 25% idle. Like the doughnut in a car, only for a short term.

Yeah...if you have access to 4 cycle oil, you should be able to get 2 cycle oil. Maybe if you're stuck in the middle of a lake without gas an another boater offers you some 4 cycle oil, but even then I would ask for a tow before using it...

It's not just "2 Cycle oil" that you need. It's outboard 2 stroke oil (TCW-3) grade. The type you buy everywhere is for chainsaws. Use the best you can get and save in repairs in the long run.

I have a friend that for years used and still use 4 stroke oil on his outboard. I used to tell him he was using the wrong oil. He will reply back to me that 4 stroke was for 4 cylinders motors and 2 stroke oil is for 2 cylinders motors. His motor runs good anyway, not much smoke than my Yamaha back then when using 2 stroke oil.

4-stroke oil is not designed to be burned...

Hence, we have 2-stroke and 4-stroke oils...

He would probably use the 2 stroke + 4 stroke oil  However, all that said, he never seem to have a problem, although he was using the wrong oil...

Depends on what you call a problem. No, the engine isn't going to blow up as soon as you put in the wrong oil, but it will have increased wear and carbon buildup which wouldn't be immediately noticeable. I would consider that a problem...
