I was wondering if anyone had heard of the HiStar 44 or of the hyundai elegant 44ft. I am wanting to buy a boat that has 2staterooms, 2heads, a full galley with full size ref/freez. I have also seen sea ray aft cabin420 or sea ray sedan bridge40.Does anyone have any knowledge of the seaworthiness of the foreign boats.

can't help you on the HyStars, never even heard of it actually, only Euro boats i work on are Sunseekers.. avoid the majority of Taiwan boats for sure...

the newer SR's are very nice, i work on a few in that range. they have a few issues but nothing drastic. the older, larger SR's definitely had some major probs tho, structural and otherwise. same with the older, larger Silvertons...

alot of bigger Carvers showing up in the marina lately too, must be priced right.

Re: 40-44 ft boats

Ryoken, thx for the advice last week on prop/shaft painting (or lack of). I've decided not to put trilux antifouling on either of the two. One follow-up though. I've got a bow thruster on the 322 silverton. Appears that there was some black paint on the plastic prop (presumably the antifouling paint), but nothing o the bronze colored body of the thruster, Should I simply lightly sand it down and NOT antifouling spray this, but just spray the plastic prop or shall I spray both? Also, your comment about some of the older large silverton's and their state rooms, have you seen any issues with anything in the year 2000 range of the 322 motoryachts? thx sd

Do I read it that you are not painting the props? If so, don't sand the bronze if you are not painting it for underwater use. Sanding will make it easier for growth to grab on to. Use muratic acid to clean bronze shafts, struts and props if leaving them for natural antifouling.

I tried not painting bronze props in Florida waters and it didn't work that well...even after cleaning properly. It isn't like stuff won't grow on them. The growth just comes off easier when underway.

Re: 40-44 ft boats

thx BillP. I'm on the chesapeake (annapolis area). I looked under many boats in the yard and it would appear that there's no sign of any of the shafts or bronze props having had any paint on them. Perhaps problems with growth on moving parts is not as great up here. I'm not sure how to compare it. sd

Re: 40-44 ft boats

hi H2O,

glad i was a help. :)

definitely recoat the plastic prop. as far as the bronze section, i would consider hitting that as well, mainly for the fact they can be a little difficult to clean in there if they get loaded up. also it is unlikely that you'll be putting it to as much use as your running gear, therefore more likely to get growth.

as Bill stated a sanded surface will allow barnicles to grab it easier, so if you do need to sand any difficult growth off and decide to leave it bare, make sure you finish sand it with some finer paper after you clean it up.. say 600 wet...

as far as 2000 322's, i was more refering to Silvertons over 40 and early 90's. the newer stuff in your range seem fine.. one of my guys has a 2001 and it seems to be a nice boat..

i have a couple older ones in the yard in the 50 range that are stresscracked disasters.. it seems they where big on applying their smaller boat technology to the larger boats back in those days. stringers, bulkheads, decks, etc leading to some ugly fiberglass issues...

this is also the case for the older, larger Sea Rays, lack of bulkheads, inappropriate flooring stucture, etc led to some of those very issues on larger models..

hey Bill, btw, haha, bronze shafts, thats funny, don't see that often anymore. only boat left in my yard with bronze shafts is a 1965 Hat. they finally had to be replaced last year, chopped them out and replaced em with stainless.. man them suckers where heavy.
