40 E-tec Spare Prop

I have a 2006 40hp tiller E-tec with an aluminum prop. It is a 3 blade prop with 13 splines. The motor has less than 100 hours on it and it runs great. However, I have no tach so I can not be sure what the rpm's are at top end.

I believe this is the original prop. Other than the size and pitch (13 1/2 x 15), I only find two other numbers on the prop....18716 with what looks like clover design stamped in the metal, AND 763466. The motor is mounted on a 150T Lowe V-bottom fishing boat.

Before I start using this boat, I want to buy a spare prop. I find this process very confusing. No one seems to spell out 2006 40hp E-tec. Is this a "commercial" engine, does it have the "large" lower unit, etc. Who can help me find a spare for this engine?

Please advise,

Re: 40 E-tec Spare Prop

It would be VERY benficial to know the WOT rpms your turning before an accurate recommendatuion can be made. You can get a TinyTac off of ebay for just a few dollars. I have seen them for $20. With the WOT rpms an accurate recommendation can be given that you will be MUCH happier with. Also you will need to decide on whether or not you would benefit from a stainless prop and keep your original prop for a spare. I myself always run stainless simply because of the advantage that you have with a stainless prop.BUT with todays newer design props an aluminum is a great choice on the smaller engines.

Give us the model number off of the engine....that will help out tremendously.....I doubt it is the commercial engine and probably has the standard ETEC gear case.

Re: 40 E-tec Spare Prop

If you read the stickys at the top of the prop forum it may help you understand prop selection better.
Pitch is the key number selecting a pitch is like selecting a single gear in your car to do everything.
Your shooting for your motor to be able to operate within its rated wot rpm range. I believe 5000 to 6000.
The Etec has a numerically high gear ratio 2.67.This allows the motor to turn a larger than typical prop. While prop sizes for boats similar to yours are usually around 15" to 17" pitch. Prop size is written diameter X pitch. Diameter usually varies slightly based on the pitch
and prop design.
I do have a feeling that a tach will indicate a 17" pitch may be needed.
If you usually haul extra weight a lower pitch may be necessary. Thus the need for a tach.
All this fuss about your "right" prop is to get you the best prop for your purpose
it may turn out that your present prop should serve as the spare.

Model # is E40DPLSD. I fish in Canada quite a bit, and I am a little afraid to run a stainless prop in all those rocks. A couple of my friends actually run a composite prop up there.

Re: 40 E-tec Spare Prop

Steelespike, thanks for the information. Are these retro-tacs easy to connect? Let me ask you guys another electronic question. This Lowe boat has a trim/tilt toggle switch at the bow of the boat next to the T-motor connection. It does not work. What is the best way to go about connecting that toggle or trouble shooting it? Thanks again.

Re: 40 E-tec Spare Prop

The Tiny tach is simple and can be used on almost any motor lawnmower outboard 1 cylinder or 16 cylinder though a 16 might require
some math.Install can be temporary or permanent and I think my 8 year old grandson could do it with some guidance from me.
I would suggest avoiding ss props if a rock strike is possible.
Your switch problem you should list separately in the appropriate section to avoid confusion and to get quicker more constructive help.

Please advise,
check out the evinrude etec site .they have reports of various boats using the 40 and the results.might be a boat close to yours in there.the 40 has the same lower unit as the 60, as the others in the in line class.its a large gearcase as or the exact same as my 1982 90 hp .operating range is 5000-6000 rpm .you cannot over rev for any period of time that would hurt the motor as it is also rev limited.i belive it rev limites at 6200 if i remember correctly.i know when i bought mine i wasnt 100 percent sure if the tac was honest so the dealer hooked up to the computer after i did some runs and he could tell me exactly how many rpms and for how long i was at said rpm,s.even if i hit the rev limiter it also tattled about that also.mine is a 2011 60hp with a cederstrip boat the weights approx 550 lbs unrigged.mine is best allaround with a 15 p though i can get away with 17p lightly loaded.i see from the tests that evinrude did the 40 used 13 to 17 p depending on the boat and setup.
