Impellers allways look perfect until they fly appart. I'm not being cynical (heck, I probably even misspelled the word), but they truely do. If anything, there will be a slight bit of wear on the tips of the vanes, but will still function for a little while.<br />Also, an impeller that has been in a motor that sat for a few months without use, will "take a set". This is when the vanes form a shape to the eliptical pump housing, effectively ruining it.Impellers that have taken a set, will usually only pump water at high RPM. But as far as being able to determine the condition of an existing impeller, that's about it.<br />Regardless of how good an impeller looks allways replace it, and the thermostat, with new ones.<br />They rarely last longer than two seasons under normal useage anyhow, and less than that if you do a lot of idling.<br />Also, the thermostat will take about two minutes to open letting anything to show from the exaust.
