I have a 1964 40 hp Johnson engine. The Electronic transmission disengages at mid-high rpm. The control must be shifted to reverse then back into forward before it will re-engage. At low speed it will stay in Forward. Once the rpm's are increased, it will jump out. Any suggestions as to what may be the problem and possible solutions?

Thanks a heap

Gary... That problem could be caused by a few things as follows:

Wrong Oil: Should be Preminum Blend, also known as Type C. You cannot use HiVis (manual shift) lube in the electric shift units.

Low oil.

Worn forward spring and hub: This is the usual problem, and if so, both the spring and hub will require replacing. The slightest scoring renders the hub and spring useless.

Should you find that you need the hub and spring, contact me via e-mail. I have one each left in my remaining stock... expensive items but I'll discount them. ReevesJ32@aol.com
