My dad has an '89 40hp Johnson that has sat about 5 years. I got it going for him without too much trouble, he used the valve stem looking fog thing when he put it up. I replaced the plugs and ran a little seafoam through it. On the hose it starts instantly and runs great- revs all the way up with no hesitation. In the water it starts bogging and won't get on plane. It must be a fuel problem because he can push the key in and it will rev out when it gets the shot of fuel. I guess it needs a carb cleaning and rebuild, but I don't understand why it runs so good on the hose. Any ideas?
Thanks
