40 hp evinrude

Trying to figure out some info on an evinrude motor model # rds-23. Serial # 2223152 what exactly is it? What year?

RDS23 is a 1961 40hp Johnson

You have a 1961 model.----40 hp.-----Best to start with a complete evaluation before spending any money on it.------Compression test first.----Then pull the flywheel to inspect the 2 coils.----Perhaps pull the bypass covers on the port side to look at pistons / rings.

Here is a link to a service manual. Even though it says Evinrude, the guts of the engine are the same
