I have a 1950's model Evinrude (40 hp) that has been in storage and that has never been started. What is this thing worth?

Em, first year for 40hp was 1960.
Give us the model number from the mount clamp
and we can date it.
Dont bother asking about value at the
antique outboard site.If it is a properly stored
sound motor it could bring in some big bucks from the right buyer.Check on ebay that should give a pretty good idea.Keep in mind shipping is tricky and expensive.

Sorry, my mistake. It is actually a 1969 model. I bought it at a school surplus auction. The motor was purchased for use in a vocational school. Looks like they never even touched it! I thought that a that a motor like this would be rare.

EM, An unused 69 motor is surely rare, rarity doesnt neccesarily mean great value. It surely is worth some serious money to the right person.
Some months ago there was a factory fresh 20hp.
Chrysler sold on ebay.Dont recall the exact amount but it was something like 2,000 dollars.
Does that mean your motor is worth 2,000----
maybe. There was a new very rare highly sought after 1950s Merc 30 racer that as I recall was listed repeatedly and bid to somewhere around 3,000
didnt make its researve.
I dont know if it ever sold.

If you mean rare, as in having classic collector value, I would say no.

There is a definite market for Big Twin/Lark engines from about 1955 to about 1960. People want them for wooden or finned runabouts of that era.

The later engines don't have that market. But, parts are certainly available for your engine, so it should get several hundred dollars as an alternative to someone spending thousands on a "real new" outboard.

One thing we all need to remember is, no matter what it looks like, It's not a boat till it floats and it's not a motor till it runs.
