I used to have a 1975 75 hp that used way less gas than my 1990 40 I sometimes have power fluxuation but I have a 12 gallon tank and after 20 minutes running all out i done used 3/4 of it but at todays gas prices makes enjoying the water a little hard.

A friend has a 1991 48 hp on a heavier boat and uses on 1/4 tank of gas to my 3/4

any suggestions please help

Maybe it is leakiing gas. Take off thecowling and observe the carbs. See if there is leaking gas into the water.

my guess is that your either running really rich, or you have a leak.

if its leaking fuel and oil mix thru the prop, either you are not running on all cylinders or your running way too rich. fuel that is supposed to be burnt is making to the exhaust thru your prop.

Back to basics: Check the compression and spark on both cylinders. Then use a squirt bottle of premix and squirt it into each of the carbs when it is running to see what the results are.
Did you mean fuel filter?
