Re: 40 hp force hard to start

Is your choke working. Motors are almost impossible to cold start without the choke open. Seems like most problems are fuel problems. If choke is working might want to consider rebuilding the carb ($12) and fuel pump diaphram and gasket ($8). I did this to my chrysler. Had a hell of a time starting it and then it would not idle unless i kept hitting the choke. New carb kit and fuel pump and I cant believe how good it runs. Only took about an hour to do the whole thing

When you store the boat in winter do you run the gas out and fog the motor. leaving gas in the carb can gum the needle valve so it wont open and close correctly. Do you have a manual?

Re: 40 hp force hard to start

When you pull the carb apart pull all the gaskets and seats out of it. Spray it down good with carb cleaner to loosen varnish and gum you might see, best to soak over night. Chances are the main jet does not come out. Run a thin wire through it and use a magnifing glass to inspect the hole carb for gunk. When you remove the ldle adjust screw inspect the tip for groves or flat head. If this is bad you should replace it. The carb kit I got from NAPA had a really good blow up and instructions. You will have spare parts from the kit. They are for multiple type carbs.

The fuel pump I would only replace the diaphram and the gasket after cleaning it with carb cleaner and rag. the kit will come with gaskets for the valve seats but I dont recommend replacing these unless you have to. Two of the valve seats are press fit and I busted one trying to get it out and it sucked trying to find replacement ones. When you are done also replace all your fuel line on boat. The fuel line from napa is a buck a foot.

Sounds like a lot of work but it is really simple. Get it all back together and prime it with gas and check for leaks. If carb leaks out top you will have to readjust float.

good luck
