40 hp Johnson cooling issues

Hey, just got a 1986 40 hp Johnson. I hooked it up to my hose with ears and fired her up. Tell tail showed a ton of water but the power head (upper cylinder) was getting hot. Shut her down. Any ideas, water pump or thermostat(?). Motor did sit for at least a year. Thanks for any help.

If it sat for any amount of time, I would replace the impeller even if it seems to be flowing well. But I would also replace the thermostat and flow water through the engine with the hose from all directions to make certain is was clear and flowing properly. JMHO
