 Hello all. I have a 40 hp mariner that is a mid 80's i believe. At the end of last year, transom broke after hittin somethin in the river and the motor took a dip. Since then I have fixed the transom, pulled the plugs and got the moisture out , and changed out the fuel.

The motor starts but while in the water, you have to keep pushin in the choke to keep it runnin. Talked to a local dealorship but they say they don't work on anything over 20 years old.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

... and the motor took a dip. ....

Was the engine cleaned out IMMEDIATELY after the aforementioned 'dip'? if not, then it's usually 'goodnight engine'. The water (river water is usually salty) sits in the carb and cylinders and has a little 'corrosion party'. It also sits up in the electrics and does the same.

By the sound of the symptom I'd try cleaning the carb, but I'd also expect that your engine is not long for this world if it wasn't completely cleaned out after being dunked.

Re: 40 hp mariner

The "dip" happened at night so the motor wasn;t cleaned til the next morning. I pulled the plugs and turned it over some to blow out the water. Also was told to spray a little wd40 in it to remove water so I did that also. As for the carbs, they havn't been removed and cleaned, just some carb cleaner sprayed into them. I really hope it isn't bye bye to the motor graveyard. When it runs now, it sounds great, just won't stay runnin.:confused:

ok.. Given everything else is ok... pull the carb and clean it out, looking particularly at the idle circuits and passages. Soak it in carb cleaner overnight.

It's running lean,Have the fuel system and carb rebuilt. You WON'Tget it clean with a spray carb product.
