40 hp mercury

I have a 2012 40 HP Mercury outboard and recently we where out at lake fishing!When we tried to start motor to move the motor made a grinding noise and motor will not start!Tried a few times to start motor but each time key was turned over just a grinding noise and motor will not start!Any info would be greatly appreciated,thanks!

Welcome to iboats.

Make sure the battery has a full charge, then try again.
A weak battery will cause the starter to only partially engage, or simply won't have the power to turn the engine.

Also, clean and tighten all battery cable connections on the battery, the starter solenoid, and the ground cable,

Thanks folks for the info,this sounds like a good starting point! I will give it a shot this weekend
