I mistakenly removed the shift pivot screw instead of the crankcase level plug. The manual says that it cannot be reinstalled w/o a full tear down of the gear case. Anyone have any tricks to reinstall without a tear down? the engine is a 91.

Don't know what engine you have, but I can't imagine you'd need to do a tear down just to put a screw in that you were able to access to remove. Try a screw holding screwdriver or something.

Welcome to the boards!
I've gotten lucky a couple times. If you haven't moved the shift lever your odds are good. That screw goes through a hole in the bottom of a rocker-arm thingy that moves the clutch dog back and forth. So you need to line up the hole in the rocker-arm and reinsert the screw. If you use a flashlight and look in the screw hole you might be able to see the rocker-arm inside. Use a pointed awl or a nail or something to get the holes aligned, then put the screw in. If you hit it right the shift will work correctly. You'll know when you got it.
I did this on an 18HP that had been shifted with the screw out and the rocker arm thingy was way out of line. I shifted the forward-reverse lever while working the rocker-arm into correct alignment with the awl. Took a while but I got it. It helped to know what I was trying to make happen. Obvioulsy you want to turn everything by hand when you're done and check forward/neutral/reverse is working A-OK before you fire up the powerhead and start shifting. You don't want 40HP pushing things around in the gearcase unless everything's A-OK. Good luck!

Thanks itstippy, I had looked at the blow-up dwg and could see the assembly, I was concerned that I might be missing something costly. I just got it back in after fiddling carefully with the shifter and it's working smoothly.
