I am having a great deal of trouble installing a new water pump impeller. The key just won't slide into the cutout in the brass collar when the impeller is being installed.
I have the small cutout part of the brass collar pointing in the direction of clockwise (to the left). I have the small portion of the wedge key pointing toward clockwise (to the left) as you look down on the shaft.
I have an M&R manual and it says to hold the key with Johnson grease, tried that and it failed. I've gone so far as to use a very thin double sided tape and it still shoves out when the impeller is installed. I'm trying to hold the key into position with the blade of a small screwdriver and it still shoves it out.
I'd hate to do this on the water.
Could someone please tell me the secret to installing the impeller???
