40hp 2cyl Merc(1982) Starting problems

Basically here is what's happening...I can start the motor fine one day, with the throttle button engaged. Then I try it again a few days later and it just cranks and cranks, but never turns over. Usually when starting it, I flip the throttle switch on the motor to the right and try it first without squeezing the bulb. That usually works. But then a few days later, it won't start, then I try again a day or so later and it fires right up. Any idea's?

BTW...Sparkplugs are brand new...
