well after doing all the suggested things like cleaning carbs, running power tune thru engine etc. my 40 4 stroke still ran rough and had a bad
hesitation on acceleration.
took it to an authorized merc shop and this is what they did.
they cleaned the carbs (even though they were clean)
changed the plugs, (i had just done that too)
did a compression test, and found cylinder #2
had 11% leak down. they shock treated it with a
yamaha product and this supposedly fixed the compression issue.
they tested the fuel pump and replaced both diaphrams.
they synched the carbs,
they then reported to me that it still hesitated.
this was caused by a leaky gasket on the case seal where the block is mated to the crankcase.
they replaced this and now all is well.
repair bill approx $800.00
after i checked the bill i found two case gaskets
at 2 different prices i might add....
billed. and 6 gallons of premium fuel billed that
were never put in the tank....
well i got it home after haggling over the bill,
put it in the river and it ran like #$%^.
limped home with it and found it was only running on 2 cylinders. an hour of troubleshooting later and i found they ripped a wire out of the connector that goes to the bottom cylinder ignition coil. i fixed this and it seems to run ok now.
are all shops like this?
what course of action should i take?
is there a complaint line at mercury.
they are an authorized merc shop???
