I recently bought a 1991 40hp evinrude. It will run for about 10 seconds then die out. The motor was rebuilt 1 year ago. Could it be the timing or is it a linkage issue?

Has it been sitting for a long time? Did this just recently crop up? Did it ever run right? Sounds like a fuel related problem, but hard to narrow down without some backround info. Can you give us some more details??

An outboards timing usually stays put, and rarely needs to be adjusted.

It could be a lot of things. The first thing I would check into, would be the fuel system. It is probably time to overhaul the carbs and install a new fuel pump diaphram. It would be a good idea to check the compression, too.

What happens if you tap the choke after it is running?

Discribe the starting procedure you are using.

Yeah the problem just popped up. I cant get an accurate compressin check because it wont stay running long enough to heat the block up. The motor was running like a champ last season, i used to duck hunt out of the boat. The fuel was drained out the end of the season.

I would do as Roscoe suggests and rebuild the carbs and fuel pump. Compression can be checked cold, as all you are looking for is the cylinders to be within 10% of each other, regardless of the readings. I'm betting clogged carbs, as it did run well last season... FYI, it is not nessesary to drain the carbs at the end of the season. Just add stabil and keep um full.

Thank you Gentlemen for your help. Let me give you a little more detail when you open the throttle up the butterfly valve inside the carb only goes about 7/8 of the way to parallel. Also the hot start seems to choke it out
