40hp force issues

Hello everyone. I need your advice as to what is going on with my 40 hp force. It starts right up idles high then slams into gear. Rpms drop then begins to rev high again, close to 1200rpms to 2000rs. It runs for about an hour them mysteriously stops and gets
no electric to the switch. I replaced the battery thinking that it went dead. But to no avail. Then two days later it started and the same thing happened and now it won't start same thing

Test the regulator?

Ok, thank you for your quick response.
i believe it is either a 1994 or a 1996 force 40 .
the regulator makes sense as the amp gauge prior to it shutting down was pegging at 18 amps . Now the gauge doesn't work at all . Lights come on , that's it. Almost seams like the choke or kill switch is bad. Or something wrong with the voltage regulator as you pointed out. Thanks in advance

IF??? you think the choke is bad??
They used a primer not a choke, inside the primer is
a rubber diaphragm, it can go bad and push excess
fuel into the motor and kill it.

Ok so voltage regulator and 25 amp fuse replace in the motor, motor fires right up but is running rough and water is filling the lower shroud and wires. Not sure what's going on with that , but that can't be good. Any thoughts?
