Could use a little professional guidance. 1990 40hp Force. Fuel pump diaphragm was ripped, installed a new one. Now, I'm having trouble cranking the motor. Will not start with the throttle in the "start" position, it begins to fire only after advancing the throttle. Heaven forbid I push the choke in, guaranteed won't start. Haven't checked the timing, but appears to have good spark to the cylinders. Carb recently cleaned, needle valve seat & float adjustment look good. At this point, I'm running out of ideas or can't see the forest for the trees. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks-

Is the carb cleaned after you ripped the diaphragm?
If not, clean again. Parts of the diaphragm maybe in the jets.

If you have clean the carb after ripped diaphragm, check if the plugs are wet after you tried to start.
Plugs not wet....... fuel delivery issue. If wet, check for spark.

If you not have touch anything for the ignition system then it would not be out of adjustment.

The 1990 40hp??
According to the parts diagrams.
They didn't make a 40 until 1992

Pics of the carb and choke setup?

The 92 had a primer system.
Possible it's gone bad.

How did it run once it started?

Any repairs or parts replacements?

Start with new hoses and check the pump for proper assy.
You can have 2 styles of pumps.
which do you have?

You can't post pics till you have 5 posts.
Get busy and make a few posts and then add some pics.

Since Windows 10 I can't post pics or use my old pics here on Iboats :(

Appreciate the replies. Obviously need to verify the VIN #; tag on the motor is illegible. Only one I have to go on is on the title. To answer a couple of the questions, yes, the carb was thoroughly cleaned with B12 after installing the new fuel pump. Once I was able to get it running, it ran fine other than having to keep it idled up a bit, but once I killed it after it warmed up, it would not start. It's got new properly gapped plugs, but I need to check for fuel after trying to start it. Only hose that has not been replaced is from the fuel pump to the carburetor. Let me get a few posts out of the way, I'll get some pics up. Again, thanks for the help-
