I just put a new lower unit on my 2000 40hp Merc. I started it at home with ear muffs and put in forward and reverse gear and get a little growling kinda noise.(hard to describe) But when I give it throttle it goes away in both forward and reverse.
When installing, every thing seem to fit fine. The shift linkage lined up and appeared to work correctly. Dont know if I can take it out or not.

Is there adjustment in linkage? It doesnt look like it to me.
There is a little play when grabing and moving the prop in and out is this normal play?

Thanks
Guys

Re: 40hp forward reverse noise

Shift adjustment is done where the cables fasten to the engine early cables you turn the barrel on the cable for adjustment and new style cables you turn the end connector on the cable

Re: 40hp forward reverse noise (help)

Sorry I have a tiller handle, I dont have cables to adjust. Linkage arm comes up from lower unit and connects with a pin. The linkage arm is solid with a single hole at top. I dont see any ajustment.

Thanks
