Gidday from Down Under,

I bought a 40hp Johnson. Recently serviced (supposedly). It does look oiled up etc, like it's been running recently. Very young Outboard mechanic attempted to con me into believing it was a 1964. Electric controllers weren't produced on 40hp Johnson until 1969 - 1974 or 1971 - 1974.

Motor will not start with fuel, but will with aero start then stops immediately aero start has been burnt up, about 1 second. I have attempted to dry start it without aero start or fuel. It backfires with a loud bang.

An older outboard mechanic tells me the electric controller is the problem. He says they short out constantly.

What hints do you have apart from replacing the motor. I just bought it.

Regards
Victor

Better listen to the kid. It very well could be a 1964 with Electramatic Shift---that's what you mean, right? Electramatic Shift came out on the 40hp in 1962. Sorry, but I don't buy the theory that the control is keeping it from starting.

1970 was the last year for the electric shift on the 40hp

Motor’s model number should contain model year. It’s usually stamped or printed on it. For example, 40EL71G is a 40hp elec. 1971
