40hp johnson rd-23 wont rev out in gear

hi guys, small prob my motor idles perfect but will not rev out in gear, it only revs slightly at full throttle but in neutral revs normaly can anyone help me pls :confused: <br /><br />regards snapper head

you may be dropping a cylinder.<br /><br />Have you checked for spark on both cylinders? Both should be able to jump a 1/4" to 1/2" gap with a bright blue snap. If not, then you probably have bad coils, dirty or mis-adjusted points, or maybe a wiring fault.<br /><br />This can be a problem with these old motors, luckily it is easily overcome.

Could also be a blown headgasket - check for water on your plugs...<br />I am in agreement with Lark - you're more than likely dropping a cylinder in one way or another.<br />- Scott
