Is it hard to replace/rebuild lower unit your self. I chipped one of the inner gears and broke the main shaft to the crankcase. I got the broken piece out of the crank case. Ive heard that shimming the drive gears back can be tricky. Is this the only tricky part to doing this, is there any special tools. Can I figure this out myself is it that tough?

Do you have a factory service manual for the engine? That will detail the complete overhaul of the lower unit and the tools required. Based on that information you should be able to make a decision on whether or not this is a job for you or a professional. You could also consider a rebuilt lower unit from one of many places online, including iboats.
