40hp merc '78...motor won't turn off.

I had a problem with the control box and steering. I kept getting an electrical shock. Changed all the wires and grounds. Motor runs great! Why won't it turn off? I am using the wiring schematics that I got from a book. I'm sure I wired right. What am I missing? Any suggestions? Thanks......

Might look at your ignition switch. It may be defective. If OEM probably is. Probably some contact material wore off and made a path across the insulator part so that when power is supposed to be off it's still on.
