hello everybody i have a 1982 40hp mercury remote motor crank fairly good but when i put it in gear it dies instantly. sometime it will let you take off and when it does it will not rev to full rpm's. has a smothering sound at wot. i have had the control box replaced, checked compression, fuel system, rebuilt carb, checked exhaust tube for restrictions. dont know what else to do. Thanks popatop

Could the lower unit be siezing up. Pull all the plugs, put it in gear and spin the flywheel by hand to feel all the bearings top to bottom. If it spins OK, you will need to go back to the motor. Stuck carb maybe?

A sticky carb like Bushcat said or it is also possible that your fuel pump might have a bad diaphram or it could be sucking in air.

Are you running on both cylinders? Try removing and grounding one of the plug wires, start the motor up and see if it sounds any different. If it won't start at all on one and will the other, then you've localized your problem... Then you can start swapping coils for top and bottom to localize it further...
- Scott

I have the same motor except 1980. It was doing the exact same thing last year. I had thed coils replaced and it was fine.

Keep hoping that it's a binding lower unit, or a carb, electrical, or setup problem.

The last resort problem **could** be something to do with the reeds. Not as likely, and a real pain to fix.

-W
