Have a 1996 40hp Mercury Model #C40ELHPTO, Ser. # 06314541. Starts great from the boat launch, run to fishing spot, fish for a while and when I try to restart, turn key and nothing happens. Now, if I put emergency pull cord on and turn motor over, then hit key, it fires right off.

Have checked to make sure starter is engaging and disengaging, batteries are fine. I think it's some kind of safety feature that I can't find or figure out, at least that's what it acts like. Again, when I hit key, nothing happens, starter doesn't try to engage, no noise like something is trying to happen, it's just as if the kill switch is tripped but it's not.

Was wondering if it could be a bad selenoid or something, just seems weird to me that it fires right off after it's been turned over. Needless to say, it's very irritating and frustrating. If I don't get it fixed soon, my 8 year old fishing fanatic son is going to learn alot of new words that his mother won't be happy about!!!

Thanks in advance for any help, Really appreciate this forum, glad I found you guys!!
