Hey everyone, I just purchased a pontoon that has a 86 johnson 40. I took it out yesterday and every time wouldshut it off I would have to boost it off, and take the cover off and open the manual primer before it would start. On the way back in at full throttle it would stall out, had to repeat process, and it seemed like the boat got slower every time. Any help would be great. Thanks

vent open and clear on fuel tank? what do you mean "boost it off"? can you hear a click when you push in on the key in the on position? was it over heating? sounds like it needs some maintenance. when was the impeller last changed, carb cleaned, battery connections cleaned both ends.

yes the vent is open, I had to carry a jumper box to start the boat with, but the battery shows full charge off the boat and all connections are good. There is no over heating. But what about having to open the manual primer after it dies? Sorry, but this is my first boat motor.

remove cover, see if you can here the primer click? if not take a jumper wire from pos post on solenoid, and jump the pos wire on solenoid, if you get the click then, you have a connection problem. it is usually the ground wire on the primer solenoid, or bad ignition switch.

if you are having to use jumper box, you have a week battery or bad connection or bad battery cables.

Ethanol and fuel lines
replace all fuel line with Alcohol resistant lines. Ethanol deteriorates, the rubber lines, then they start to sluff off on the inside, going directly to the carbs. Settling to the bottom of the bowl. Contaminating the carbs high speed jets. clean a rebuild carbs, flushing fuel line before connecting to carbs.

When you turn the primer it sounds like air is releasing. Also how do you check to see if your batt is charging?
