Im looking at 2 motors at the moment and can"t decide which is the better buy. 1st is a 40hp tohatsu twin cylender 99 model $2,500. The other is a 40hp Mariner(yamaha)93 model $2,000. The Tohatsu has had piston replaced due to an overheating incident with a plastic bag but looks like new. Mariner is in very good condition also but has a fiew scraches. Are these motors correctly priced? which is better buy? Also is there any publication with second hand valuations of various motors? Should the Tohatsu be as good as before with only 1 piston replaced (standard size) Many thanks again...

i would always choose a factory origional motor
over a rebuilt, especially if the price is close.
make sure to check compression either way.
good luck,
M.Y.

I'm not sure how Australia compares to Florida in pricing, but $2000 seems about $1000 too high for a 10 year old 40 horse. Depending on the configuration (remote, power trim, elec. start), a new Tohatsu 40 2-cycle sells for about $3000-$4000. It may be worth the risk, if it's a remote model with power trim & tilt. Otherwise, for a few hundred more buy a brand new one - or keep looking.

Matt

Ahoy, Jason.

You don't say if the prices are USD or OZD. Both seem high to me in USD.

I would go for the Tohatsu because of it's reputation for indestructibility.

Good luck. :)

I would agree with the high prices. I purchased 94 30hp Yamaha last year for $1100. I believe the 30 hp and 40 hp Yamahas in that era were the same motor. Sounds like $1300+/- a little would be a reasonable price for the Yamaha. USD
D
