Im thinking of upgrading my 25hp suzuki with a 40hp Tohatsu. I need a short shaft so pretty much stuck with a tohatsu or an older Mariner (built by yamaha) or of course a Yamaha its self. Any idea which of these engines would be the best? Im mainly interested in performance but of course reliability must come into it also. One concern of mine is that the Tohatsu is much smaller in engine capacity than the Tohatsu and is actually a has a smaller displacement (just) than my suzuki 25. Many thanks for your help once again...

I have a 95 40HP Tohatsu and it's a great motor. Only problem is you have to wait about a week for any parts, but they are available (from Texas.) Motor weighs only 128 lbs but is very heavy duty. Does lack torque (only 500 cc) to get boat planed but then it's fine and gets good mileage.
