40hp VRO

I've had to disconnect the VRO on my '89 40hp Johnson.(bad oil pump, lack of cash to replace it).<br /> I've seen several posts here about the wiring of the pump and none matches mine.<br /> My boat was rigged(new) by Tracker and several pieces and parts are not standard Johnson.<br /> The 3 wires from the pump are routed under the powerhead and I cannot find any quick disconnect anywhere on the harness, in fact, after the wires disappear under the engine I can't even find the same colored wires at the terminal box.<br /> I've cut and taped the 3 wires coming from the pump and cut and taped the 2 wires at the top on the oil tank, removed the VRO pump, installed a new standard fuel pump and put a brass plug in the pulse limiter hole in the block.<br /> I've cleaned the carbs and put in carb kits and all new fuel hoses.<br /> Running fine on the muff and hose but I'm wondering if I'm missing anything on the VRO disconnect that may hurt the engine.<br /> Too cold here to try it out on the water right now. Just wondering what I may have missed and want to get it right.

jakers4777,Locate the tan colored wire near thermostat housing and with the key turned to the on position ,ground this wire and see if the overheat alarm is working.You can also locate this wire by tracing from the temp sensor.

Thanks, the test you give works out ok. As I 've said before, all seems to be working well after disconnecting the VRO. I just thought I would post here and see if I had missed something that may be harmful to the engine while I'm doing away with the VRO.

I have 2 of the same motors, although a year younger, and I can assure you that there is a quick disconnect on the 3 wire VRO pump. Mine I found behind the starter, in the area of the fuel filter, below the main wiring quick disconnect (big red plug). Gently remove all the wiring that runs down the side of the cowling and unplug the big red plug. This should give you better access to find the vro disconnect. You are looking for a small black rubber plug, much the same as the big red one but a lot smaller. Once disconnected, remember to re-connect the main plug and carefully replace all wiring into the cowling so that the cover does not damage them.<br /><br />Good luck.
