I recently bought a boat with a older 427ci chevy only 40 hrs on the motor.how reliable are these motors? what kind of performance can i expect out of a 19ft boat with this motor?

This is a rebuilt motor I assume? Sounds like a ton of power for a 19 foot boat. I had a 200hp Merc 305 that moved my old Celebrity 19' along at 44-47 mph. Hold on tight!
Purebreed

What kind of drive system? There were some v-drives and jets built with that engine. Not sure about any I/Os, but I am sure that many repowers have happened.

It is a repower! Had a chevy 350 5.7 ltr before, Also has straight 4" thru hull exhaust.

Not much to go on there fastman, some info on boat type, hull type (deepvee, flat bottom, pontoon, cat) and the drive system (Jet, Outdrive, V drive, straight inboard) are all going to effect performance.

Re: 427 ci (good motor?)

It is hard to guess what level of performance for the boat as we don't know what level of performance is built into that particular engine, and as Don says we need more hull info etc.

As far as that model engine is concerned, it was originally designed as a truck engine at 409 cubes (late '60s ?) was remade as a 427 for NASCAR and then was reduced to 396 cubes due to a Chevy edict limting engines to 400 CI for passenger cars. After the edict was lifted it went back up to 427 and then 454 which has been a very popular marine derivative. There are also 502 CI versions still available as new for marine aplications.

What is the configuration? Bowrider, cuddy, high or low feeboard? Loaded down with lots of stuff or relatively light? Have you ran the boat yet? If so, what was your WOT RPM?

More info equals better answers . . . :)

The easy answer is yes it's a good engine. They were the performance standard for Chevrolet for a number of years in the mid to late 60's. They have a ton of torque and will rev nicely as well. They were 325 to 450 hp +/- depending on the application. That engine would be better served in a classic muscle car than your boat. It's pushing the limits of the alpha drive for sure and the extra weight of the big-block will make the boat 'squat' at lower speeds. Good find.

configuration is closed bow, no cuddy, high freeboard, not loaded down, will run light, have not run the boat yet, my guess for top speed is somewhere between 65-70 mph.

Thanks magster! someday that might be exactly where that motor will go! But for now it stays in the boat. Pretty excited to here her idle, should sound good with the thru-hull setup.I am a little worried about the alpha, But it has been rebuilt with heavy duty gearing. Thanks for all the feedback guys!

Re: 427 ci (good motor?)

My BIL and I repowered a 17' med V glass ski boat with a Vee drive many years ago.
Originally this had a 350 chev and Neil bought it less engine.
He got hold of a 427 BB chev in parts which I reassembled and we stuffed it in the hole.
WOW - hang on tight.
We used to ski this to over 75 mph, tons of grunt and reliable to boot.
At reasonable ski speeds 35 - 40 mph we burned less than 5 gph at a time when a 175 - 200 hp outboard would drink double that at best.
Best of all was that sound. Not loud but a real deep growl from 2 x 3" wet exhausts.
We could get 3 skiers up on slalom from deep water start in less than the std ski rope length.
I wish it was still around.

Regards

Peter

Re: 427 ci (good motor?)

quiet cat
ya gotta go back to chebby school
the 348 was originally a truck engine and later devoloped into the 409, last produced about 63 or so. the 348,409 were unique and readily identified by the w shaped valve covers, the combustion chamber was part of the cylinder and the head was flat with no combustion chamber. in its heyday the 409 was avalible with twin rochester 4bbl and a flywheel rated Hp of 425. I dont recall any production runs with the mechanical FI used on the 283,327's of that era. the 396 was released in 65 and updated in 67. the cams on the 65,66 models were different than the later big blocks had later cams have to be modified to use in early blocks. the later 396,402,427,454 all shared the same block configuration and each could be bumped up or down as needed. the 427 went out of production about 69 or so but was a fine motor.
it more than pushs the limits of an alpha drive, by the time you get it propped correctly you will most likly grenade the upper case.

Re: 427 ci (good motor?)

So you do not think a rebuilt alpha 1 with heavy duty gearing will stand up to this motor? I now that at some point i will have to go with a bravo, but i was going to wait until i put a blower on the motor in the winter to make that change.I am hoping to at the least get a summer out of it.
