Recently bought it took it out 3 days in a row little problems. Now battery won't start it (brand new battery) so checked all wiring an terminals seems fine! Got it running sounded rough check timing fixed
Timing adjusting idle speed!! Stalls now when trying to start backfires? Points have been re set an cleaned sparks all good, plugs are getting hot when running

got spark on both plugs?
forgive me if this sounds dumb but are the leads on the right plugs?
l recently bought a 45hp that the seller said " won't start, dunno wot's wrong with it, fed up with it"
it would backfire through the exhaust but not start so a little voice inside my head said leads are on the wrong plugs... changed the leads around...bingo!
compression?
fuel?

1. What was your process of cleaning and setting the points at what gap???
2. What was your process of setting the timing at what spec?

I hope that no real harm is done to the motor due to the ?back-fire? mentioned.
A lack of good tuning specs and procedures could cause over-heating and damage.
This Is Not A Challenge, LOL! Good Luck. jow

running rough ..if you touched nothing else I would go for the contacts..you can always check if the keyway that holds the timing ring in correct place has moved ..this is a known problem with this motor ..you must have the crank nut to 85 ft lb or it will move and give you grief

Backfiring,could be a dirty carb,water in the fuel.You mixing the right amount of oil in the gas?
Bad fuel pump diaphram.
Do a compression test.
Clean the carb,Check the reeds while the carb is off,check the fuel pump diaphram.
After cleaning the carb,make sure the air screw is set right.
One turn out from lightly seated.
Remove the flywheel and check the points for corrosion and continuity.
Profile,location?You might be close to someone who can help.

Took the flywheel back of turns out the keyway had snapped hence the throw out in timing now to try find a new one
