45 HP Mercury, won't shift right, please help

I dropped the lower unit out of a 1958 45hp mercury to change a grommet, and now when I tried to put it back on I couldn't get it to drop out of gear. It will shift at the shifter but it won't go into neutral, or forward for that matter. thanks

your lower shift shaft is probably about 180degrees out. Anyway turn it untill u get a N then let it drop into F and install. Make sure the upper shifter is in F also.
