I have a 1988 45 HP Mariner. Two Tach related quetions.

1. Do I need a special tach for setting idle and checking max rpm?

2. What color wire at the controll lever will I hook up to?

I have a service manual but it is kind of vague as to what kind of tach and where to hook up.

I used an automotive tach and it seamed to work fine for idle but I am either over reving at WOT (a lot) or the Tach was not working.

the tach on that engine is driven by the 12 pole alt. and you can't use a ign. driven tach like most auto tachs are

Thanks for the reply the manual does not show that.

So if I install a tach would I set the selector on the back of the tach to 12?

Re: 45 Mariner Tach Hookup

Did not want to be like the guy with the Tilt/Trim problem and not reply.

Purchased and hooked up a regular boat tack. Works great. Timing and Sync compleated. Engine tachs out at 5800 WOT should be 5000-5500. Going to leave it alone and cruse at 5000.

Thanks for the help.
